Ban Petition to Congress from Food and Water Watch:

I urge you to protect our drinking water by implementing a federal ban on hydraulic fracturing, or natural gas fracking. The toxic results of using hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas have led to the contamination of drinking water, cattle being quarantined in Pennsylvania, and dangerous explosions in states across the country, among other issues. In order to protect our essential water resources, we need a national ban on fracking. I urge you to protect your constituents by calling for a national ban on hydraulic fracturing.

Exemptions Petition to Congress from the Natural Resources Defense Council:

Please co-sponsor H.R. 1084/S. 587 (the "FRAC Act") to repeal the exemption for hydraulic fracturing in the Safe Drinking Water Act and require public disclosure of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing fluids. During hydraulic fracturing, toxic fluids are injected underground, through drinking water aquifers, at very high pressure. This exemption, known as the "Halliburton Loophole," means that hydraulic fracturing, a common part of the oil and gas production process, is not subject to the same standards as other industries when it comes to protecting underground sources of drinking water. It is one of several environmental loopholes granted to the oil and gas industry. Fracking has already been implicated in reports of drinking water contamination in communities across the country.

I also urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 1204 (the "BREATHE Act") to repeal the Clean Air Act exemption for the oil and gas industry. This loophole allows the industry to emit toxic air pollutants into the air without the same limits that are imposed on other industries. Communities around the country are reporting serious toxic air pollution from oil and natural gas operations, and air monitoring data are producing alarming results such as high levels of benzene, a known carcinogen.

With new information about the risks from oil and gas production, it is time for Congress to update the rules and ensure that the right balance is established between oil and gas development and protection of our natural resources, including clean air and clean water. These bills are simple, straightforward and reasonable, and I hope you will co-sponsor them. Every American deserves clean drinking water and clean air.
